Starflight : The Lost Colony is an epic science-fiction adventure game that spans the galaxy, giving the player free-roaming gameplay in and around star systems with unique planetary systems filled with planets and asteroids that the player can land on and explore in real time. A compelling storyline drives the game, pitting the player against a vast enemy that is endangering the galaxy. Choose from among three professions (Military, Science, Freelance). Upgrade your ship with new technology. Hire and train a crew. Engage in dialogue with alien races–and when diplomacy fails, prepare to fight with real-time starship combat. Do you have what it takes to save the people of Myrrdan–and the galaxy?
The Lost Colony is based on Starflight and Starflight II: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula, released in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Developed by Binary Systems, published by Electronic Arts, Starflight is one of the most beloved sci-fi games of all time. Now relive the experience with modern gameplay and updated graphics, courtesy of a professional team, and learn why tens of thousands of fans the world over rate Starflight as one of their all-time favorites.
At present, the engine and most modules are finished and undergoing extensive alpha testing and fine tuning. The first beta will be released as soon as the quest and plot systems are fully working. The current Alpha version is undergoing testing and is available for download on the forum. New images have been uploaded to the artwork page! Since this game is story-driven, we have updated the opening story with some elaboration and grammatical corrections. The opening story now more closely agrees with the game (especially within the Sidhichean system and planet Myrrdan). We’re keeping the storyline under tight wrap until it’s release–you won’t be seeing hype from us, only a very cool game by a dedicated team of Starflight fans and talented developers.
The UAT student team took The Lost Colony to GDC in 2008, handed out demo CDs with fliers and packaging designed by professional marketing agency FabCom, where it was well received! Congratulations to Starflight team members Justin Sargent and Matt Klausmeier! Justin was hired by Big Huge Games, and Matt was hired by Cheyenne Mountain. Good luck, guys! Keep us posted!
The development forum is now available to the public! Come on in and chat with the development team about the game. This game is being developed by Primeval Games, in association with Binary Systems. There is an incredible amount of work required for a game of this size and complexity, where story and gameplay rules. You won’t find any shaders or multi-level terrain here, but when is the last time you’ve launched insults at a gelatinous alien and caused an interstellar incident when he attacked and forced you to blow his ship to smithereens? (It probably doesn’t help the interstellar political situation when you scavenge the debris afterward).
We have created the C++ game engine for The Lost Colony from scratch, the source code for two dozen gameplay modules, and then had to work on a huge list of art assets. The less obvious tasks include alien dialogue scripting for the encounter system, creating the galaxy database, writing quest/mission scripts for the quest system, creating the complex player user interface for the ship, creating the starport and all of it’s modules. And let’s not forget the fractal planet surfaces, for sooth! It has been extraordinarily challenging for a team of volunteers. But because they rock, you will be playing The Lost Colony during 2008.
